New Opportunities

It has been two years since we launched the Oceans of Data Institute, and our mission seems more relevant than ever.

Everybody is talking about how big data will reshape health, science, and industry. And while there's wide recognition that K-16 students need more, earlier experiences with data, we still have a way to go before they are truly equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for a data-intensive world.
 
We have worked with scientists, members of industry, and teachers at all levels to address this important skills and knowledge gap. To handle our own growth, we are pleased to announce an addition to ODI's leadership.
 
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Randy Kochevar, who will be taking over the day-to-day operations and management as ODI's new Director. Randy has been involved in developing a number of data-focused projects, including the national Animal Telemetry Network Data Assembly Center and ODI’s Ocean Tracks and Ocean Tracks: College Edition projects, which were both foundational projects for the Institute. He has a background in marine biology and brings a wealth of experience in scientific research, education, media relations and interactive media. We are very fortunate to have him!
 
I will continue to lead many of the Institute's research, development, and strategic priorities, including building relationships with education and industry partners who share our vision. But I'll be turning the reigns of this newsletter over to Randy, so that he can share updates and tell you why he thinks ODI is so important.
 
The first two years have shown us how much work is needed to prepare young people for the world that lay ahead. We have high hopes for the next two years—and well beyond.
